Non Timber Forest Products

Forests provide much more than just wood. The livelihoods of millions of people living in and near forested areas depend for a large part on products from the forest, such as fruit, honey, rattan, bamboo, vegetables and mushrooms.

Many of these non-timber forest products provide an important part of people’s diet, while others are used as medicine. These products are also being traded at local, regional or even international markets. Non-timber forest products can usually be collected without causing much damage to the forest. Encouraging this trade can therefore boost local development without compromising the future of the forest.

The partners of Rich Forests have for many years been working with local communities and companies to enhance the sustainable collection and trade of non-timber forests products.
